Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) can be caused by genetic or hereditary factors. Treatment at the Brazilian Association for Social Assistance and Development, ABADS, is fundamental for the development of patients’ families. Until the 1980s, it was believed that autism was a disorder acquired mainly through environmental influence; Today, scientists in the field consider that genetic factors contribute to around 90% of cases. According to the CDC – the US government’s Center for Disease Control and Prevention – one in every 36 American children has some level of autism. Due to lack of knowledge, many people have gone their entire lives without a diagnosis; and many adults still live with autism without knowing it.
