The Swedish pop group Abba has been showered with prizes – but this award is new: for the first time in decades, the royal family is once again awarding knightly orders for exceptional merit.

Stockholm.

The four band members of Abba receive royal medals from the Swedish royal family. The musicians Agnetha Fältskog and Anni-Frid “Frida” Lyngstad as well as the musicians Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus will receive the so-called “Vasaorden”, as the Stockholm court announced. They are all being honored “for outstanding achievements in Swedish and international musical life,” as the royal family said.

With the order, the world stars receive the title of “commanders of the first class”. For the first time in almost 50 years, the royal family is awarding the royal knightly orders to Sweden for exceptional services. The recipients were nominated by the public and the proposed names were then prepared by the Order Council of the Order of Sweden, it said. The government then approved the names and the Swedish King Carl XVI. Gustaf made the formal decision to award the medals.

Swedish actress Eva Rydberg also receives the medal. The award of the order will take place in May in a solemn ceremony at the Royal Palace in Stockholm. (dpa)
