After Meta, Twitter and Microsoft, now Amazon starts firing employees, Amazon Layoffs; Amazon to lay off 10,000 employees

Amazon.com Inc plans to lay off about 10,000 people in corporate and technology jobs starting this week, the New York Times reported on Monday.

The e-commerce company’s units, which include Alexa’s voice assistant devices, as well as its retail division and human resources, will be cut, the report said. The total number of layoffs is unclear.

Amazon did not immediately respond to Reuters’ request for comment. As of December 31 last year, Amazon had 1,608,000 full-time and part-time employees.

In doing so, Amazon joins a group of U.S. companies that are making deep job cuts in what is seen as a move to stave off a possible economic downturn.

Last week, Facebook’s parent company MetaPlatforms laid off more than 11,000 people, or 13% of its workforce, in what it said was a cost-cutting move.
