After months of restrictions, this 2024 that has just begun will be the year in which cars that are not registered in Madrid and do not have an environmental label from the DGT –except goods vehicles and mopeds-, they will be expelled from the city. The goal is that starting in 2025, no car that does not have a label in the so-called low emission zones (ZBE) will be able to circulate in the city. And since there are many doubts among drivers, we resolve them in the most specific way possible.

Firstly, and specifically, at least the vehicles that are not registered in Madrid before January 1, 2022, or those that do not pay the Mechanical Traction Vehicle Tax (IVTM) here. Of course, the Madrid City Council, during the first six months, will only issue notices. Or what is the same, until June 30, 2024, the offenders hunted by one of the 464 cameras who monitor Madrid’s roads will only receive an information letter.

However, and very importantly, if drivers are intercepted by a mobility agent, then there will be a penalty. And the fine is 200 euros, half if it is paid in the voluntary period.

This measure affects A vehicles, those without an environmental label, gasoline vehicles prior to 2001 and diesel vehicles prior to 2006. For labels B and C there are not, “nor will there be”, new prohibitions, for the moment at least.

Remember, also, that the new Sustainable Mobility ordinance approved in 2021 already vetoed the passage of unlabeled vehicles to the central almond, the Plaza Elíptica and the interior and entire ring of the M-30. The 257 traffic cameras on this ring road began recording last September, also in the warning phase, but that exception expires on January 14. Outside the M-30, the Urban Planning, Environment and Mobility Area will finish installing the remaining 207 cameras briefly.
