Amazon plans to activate the logistics warehouse at the Bobes industrial estate (Siero) in the coming months, but for now it will do so partially, enabling two of the four floors of the buildingthat is, having the plant at street level, dedicated entirely to the distribution and loading of packages.

According to sources from the multinational courier company, the plan is to start activity in Bobes before next September (when it would have been three years since its construction), but the date could be brought forward. However, the economic uncertainty experienced worldwide, which has been one of the reasons that has led the company to rethink, delay and even cancel several projects in Spain, will prevent Siero’s facilities from operating at full capacity for the time being. Therefore, everything indicates that the ship will still not generate the 2,000 jobs that it planned to create when the project was announced.

Built in August 2022 with an investment of more than 100 million euros, the Bobes building, whose mission is to centralize Amazon deliveries in the north of Spain and part of Portugal, was scheduled to open in that year. But the inflationary wave unleashed by the war in Ukraine and the slowdown in online consumption after the pandemic forced the giant Jeff Bezos to redesign its international strategy, including laying off 27,000 workers worldwide.

This change also affected the Siero facilities and, since then, the sources with which the company speaks in Asturias (the Oviedo Chamber of Commerce and the Siero City Council) have been reporting on the plans for the logistics complex, always ensuring that, despite repeated delays, the opening would be a reality sooner or later. That is to say, what, for example, has happened with the Zaragoza warehouse in which Amazon had invested 70 million and which has finally been put up for rent will not happen.

In fact, the president of the Oviedo Chamber, Carlos Paniceresrecently assured LA NUEVA ESPAÑA that he was confident that “in the next quarter there will be good news.”
