The US representative to the United Nations, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, reported that the United States, Qatar and Egypt proposed a longer truce to stop the fighting in the Gaza Strip, as well as the release of detainees.

Greenfield explained in a statement to reporters: “To pave the way towards this future (peaceful coexistence between Israelis and Palestinians), we have worked tirelessly with Qatar, Egypt and other regional partners to develop a strong and convincing proposal, as our cooperation is the best opportunity to reunite all hostages with their families.”
Greenfield noted that this proposal “would be able to lead a much longer humanitarian truce than the one in November, which would allow for the delivery of more water, fuel and medicine to Palestinian civilians.”
Greenfield emphasized that, “If this agreement is adopted and implemented, it will bring all parties one step closer to creating the conditions for a permanent cessation of hostilities.”
