Arcelor invested 128 million in its Spanish plants last year, 33% more

ArcelorMittal invested more than 128 million euros in its facilities in Spain during 2022, an increase of 33% compared to the previous year, according to the “2022 Sustainability Report” of the steel multinational, published yesterday.

The company points out that the amounts allocated to research and development (R&D) centers, whose headquarters in Spain are located in Avilés, exceeded 37 million euros last year. In this way, indicates the multinational, investment in R&D in the last three years is already above 100 million.

Likewise, investments in sustainability were 41% higher than in 2021. 12.7 million were allocated to 13 projects in energy efficiency and decarbonization, while support for 25 environmental initiatives and the improvement of biodiversity increased by 56%, reaching 13 million euros.

The report states that “current electric steel mills, such as those in Sestao and Olaberria and the one projected for Gijón, expected for 2025 that will use direct reduction of iron ore (DRI) and scrap, are the way to decarbonise the majority of integrated routes in Europe and with higher CO2 emissions.”

Arcelor estimates the economic contribution to Spain from its activity at 7,429 million euros, 27% more than in 2021. In addition, the payment of taxes to local, regional and state administrations reached 112 million euros.
