A team of astronomers of the Extragalactic Astronomy Cabinet (GAE), dependent on the Faculty of Exact, Physical and Natural Sciences (FCEFN) of the National University of San Juan (UNSJ), discovered 15 never-before-seen galaxies in the Milky Way.

To carry out this valuable astronomical discovery, the team made up of doctors Fernanda Duplancic, Georgina Coldwell, Sol Alonso and by the graduate Daniela Galdeanothey used data from survey Vista Variables in the Milky Way (VVV) obtained from observations made by the VISTA telescopewhich is located in the IV Region of Chile.

A little less than a week ago, Duplancic and Alonso had the honor of present their discovery during the “VVVX Survey” conference held at the Vatican Astronomical Observatory, in Castel Gandolfo, Italy.

“In the name of Scientific Organizing Committee Dr. Duplancic and I were invited to participate and give an invited talk at the International Workshop of the Specola Vaticana (Vatican Observatory), en ‘The VVVX Survey: Exploitation And Future Infrared Synoptic Science‘” Alonso said.

It should be noted that the scientific team of the VVV/VVVX survey, who works on various topics of stellar astronomy, is made up of scientists from various places around the world, such as Chile, Brazil, the United Kingdom, among others. While The Argentine team is made up of researchers from San Juan and Córdob and is a pioneer in the study of extragalactic objects using this data.

He work was accepted for publication in the prestigious journal Astronomy & Astrophysics, while, In addition to the four professionals mentioned above, the discovery of these new galaxies had the collaboration of undergraduate and graduate students from the UNSJ, including Julia Fernández, Noelia Pérez, Luis Pereyra and Franco Pavesich, as well as Dr. Dante Minniti , Principal Investigator of the VVV/VVVX Survey
