The American sculptor Richard Serra has died at his home on Long Island in New York, his lawyer confirms. Serra was 85 years old.

Serra was best known for his gigantic hot-rolled steel sculptures shaped into arches, spirals and ellipses. He also sculpted in other materials such as concrete, rubber and lead.

The minimalist Richard Serra, born in 1939, is considered one of the foremost sculptors of his generation.

His work began to be noticed in 1981 when his 36.5 meter long and 3.6 meter high curved steel wall, called “Tilted Arc”, was installed in Federal Plaza in New York.

The sculpture aroused strong feelings and critics demanded that it be moved. It was later dismantled, but Serra’s popularity on the New York art scene was a fact.

In 2005, eight major works by Serra were installed at the Guggenheim Museum in Spain.
