Guillaume Canet’s feature film has accumulated more than 190,000 tickets on its first day of operation.

The mixed echoes in the press did not dampen the fans. Asterix and Obelix – the Middle Empire, the feature film by Guillaume Canet inspired by the comics of the same name, achieved more than 190,000 admissions in France on the day of its release in the 770 theaters where it was screened. According to Pathé, the production would thus achieve one of the best starts for a French film for ten years when the production adds these first day tickets to those sold for the previews, for a total of 463,000 admissions.

These figures should reassure the producers and the director of the film who play big with this new episode of the Gallic adventures. On France Inter, Guillaume Canet went so far as to worry about the future of French cinema if the blockbuster did not reach its goal of achieving 5 million admissions. The minimum to reimburse the pharaonic production costs of the feature film, which amount to 65 million euros. “They all know that if this film doesn’t work, there won’t necessarily be many others : it is important that it works so that others are funded.”

Early reviews in the press and early reactions on social media boded ill for the film. With the exception of a few titles, including Le Figaro , which praised an honorable achievement, a large number of media lambasted this new adaptation of the comic book by Uderzo and Goscinny. Their reluctance did not finally get the better of the public’s interest in this seventh adaptation of the adventures of the two Gauls.
