NASA Discovers 5 Asteroids Set to Pass By Earth by the End of 2023
Using a combination of ground and space telescopes, NASA has identified and given information on 5 asteroids that are expected to pass by Earth in the coming days, up until the last day of the year 2023.
The first of these asteroids, named 2023 YD, will approach Earth on the 28th of December. This asteroid is 28 meters wide and will come within approximately 605,000 km of our planet, traveling at a speed of 35,790 km/h.
While larger than the Chelyabinsk meteorite that caused significant damage in 2013, 2023 YD is not classified as a potentially dangerous object and is not expected to pose a threat.
The remaining four asteroids belong to the Apollo group of near-Earth asteroids (NEAs). The Apollo asteroids were named after a large space rock discovered in 1862 that passed by Earth.
On January 29th, another asteroid, 2023 YZ, will pass by Earth at a distance of approximately 308 million km, traveling at a speed of 20,199 km/h. On the 30th of December, asteroid 2023 YM, 37 meters wide, will come within an estimated distance of 3.8 million km, moving at a speed of 44,491 km/h. Finally, the last day of 2023 will witness the passage of asteroid 2021 AM6, 16 meters wide, approaching from a distance of 7 million km.
