Culture is one of the twelve fundamental principles of our Constitution, the pillar of a community that must guarantee the full development of the human person, says the President of the Constitutional Court Giancarlo Coraggio. Even now, in the harsh season of the pandemic, especially looking at the future end of the emergency: Culture is therefore a right of the person and a duty of the Republic. And today, as in the post-war period, it has a central role: it can and must be the driving force for a new “reconstruction”. An eloquent parallel, the one proposed by President Coraggio, between the rebuilding of an Italy tried by war and the urgent need to mend the social fabric in the highly anticipated post-Covid era. That is after the isolation and interpersonal distancing, the suspension of sociality, the loss of work, the thousand loneliness.
Hence the new stage of the itinerary of dialogue and confrontation of the Court with civil society. In past years the judges had chosen the path of Travel to Italy in schools, in prisons, directly between citizens to re-propose the fundamental importance of our Constitution and to recount, symbolically leaving the building in Quirinale square, the role of maximum guarantor that the Court has towards Italians and their rights. Now, on a weekly basis and every Friday starting February 12, the new podcast series entitled Meetings which has the pivot in the culture. Twenty minutes of confrontation between an intellectual and a judge of the Court: a protagonist of our cultural panorama freely chooses and elaborates, in the first part of the Podcast, a topic that is then commented by one of the judges in the light of the Constitution. The podcasts will appear on the Library page of the Court’s website, on the main podcasting platforms, such as Spreaker or Spotify, on the Treccani portal and will be listened to every Sunday on Radio Radicale. A deliberately agile tool, the podcast, which explicitly addresses the new generations in particular to offer insights and useful materials for understanding the present, rediscovering the past and imagining the future.
It starts on Friday 12 with the pairing Paolo Mieli-Giancarlo Coraggio, the theme The slight favor of the Consulta for the proportional electoral system. Then a great actress, Monica Guerritore, who converses with Giuliano Amato on Art, science and information. A writer-former magistrate like Gianrico Carofiglio with judge Silvana Sciarra could not miss, on the subject Kindness, listening and courage in public and constitutional discourse.
The problem of the university is faced by the philosopher Massimo Cacciari with judge Daria de Pretis while Eva Cantarella, historian of ancient law and signature of Corriere della Sera, confronts judge Nicol Zanon on the vengeful culture of punishment. On the information here is the pairing Marco Travaglio-judge Francesco Vigan. The new rector of the Roman University Sapienza, Antonella Polimeni, and judge Stefano Petitti speak together on the issue of disabilities.
Naturally, issues of international relevance are also addressed: the architect Stefano Boeri with the judge Augusto Barbera discuss the challenge of the environment in the contemporary world, the economist Veronica De Romanis meets the judge Angelo Buscema on Debt and young people.
As for the prisoners, a theologian like Monsignor Bruno Forte and Judge Giovanni Amoroso will debate on the criminal cases and the so-called white life sentence, that of inmates still imprisoned because they are considered socially dangerous. The economist Stefano Zamagni will have in the judge Luca Antonini the interlocutor to reason about common property.
Other protagonists who have already chosen their themes are then ready to intervene. Here is the musician Nicola Piovani (The prison is a mirror of social inequalities), directors Mario Martone (The fragility of democracies and antibodies) and Marco Bellocchio (The secularity of the state).
As you can see, the idea of a vast culture and the protagonists they don’t stop at their own specific. There will also be the artist Emilio Isgr (Guarding the past, securing the future), the psychoanalyst Vittorio Lingiardi (The care of relationships), the scientist and director of CERN, Fabiola Gianotti (Science and law), the general manager of Microsoft Italy, Silvia Candiani (Constitutional law and internet access), the sports manager and president of the Egyptian Museum of Turin, Evelina Christillin (Respect in sport and culture).
