Report… from two interesting cine-actions

In the 12 years of its presence in Rhodes, in addition to its educational film programs as such, the Cine-Education Group for audiovisual literacy, has cooperated and cooperated from time to time, with various artistic bodies, as well as with notable artists of the 7th Art and professionals of the audiovisual space, but also from the entire spectrum of artistic creation in the Dodecanese and from all over Greece.

In the last fortnight of February 2024, following the proposal of director of photography Christos Nikolareos, the Cine-Education Group invited to Rhodes a notable Greek director and university student Pericles Hoursoglou and an important Greek-French documentary filmmaker and producer Marco Gastin.

Periklis Hoursoglou studied Mathematics and Directing. He worked alongside important Greek directors, especially Pantelis Voulgaris. He directed documentaries for various shows on Greek television. He has written the script and directed many short and feature films (e.g. “Leuteris Dimakopoulos”, “The gentleman in grey”, “Eyes from the night”, etc.) and a series of 13 documentaries with title “I met happy craftsmen”. His last film, produced in 2023, is “Evolution”. His films have been honored with awards and distinctions both abroad and in Greece. For 19 years he taught Directing at the Department of Cinema, School of Fine Arts, A.U.Th.

The multi-awarded documentarian, filmmaker, director and producer Greek-French Marcos Gustin was born in Paris. He lives and works in Athens since 1978. In 2002 he founded his own production company, Minimal Films. Director and producer of creative documentaries, such as “Democracy, the road of the cross” (2013), “Themis” (2008, participation in the Cannes Film Festival

2009), “Marseille, distant daughter” (2004, 1st National Documentary Award 2004), “Athens, in search of the lost city” (1993), and documentary series (for ERT), such as “Docville” (2012), ” To the sea” (2019) and co-producer of several European documentaries.

From 2/22/2024 until 2/28/2024 the welcoming space of Pallas 5 Cinemas screened “EVOLUTION” written and directed by Pericles Hoursoglou to the cinema-loving Rhodian audience. The actors in this film are: Alexandros Logothetis – Vassilis Kolovos, Eleni Gerasimidou – Dimitris Naziris, Iota Militsi. Extraordinary appearance: Vagelio Andreadakis. Music: Nikos Lyras. Production: Soul Productions – Ioanna Sultani.

The film outlines, with an inside look, the university course of the director Periklis Hoursoglou himself at the newly founded first public film school in Greece (Thessaloniki) at the beginning of the second millennium, unfolding the maturation of his relationship with his father, as very aptly and in fact, Hoursoglou developed us in the three-hour master class that followed after the screenings of his film on 1/3/2024. Frame by frame the director revealed unseen details, flashbacks, reflections during the 11 years of filming, he also talked about the casting, editing, mixing, music and so much more that was needed to complete his film . The discussion that took place afterwards between the viewers and the director in the packed “Apollo” hall of the University of the Aegean, which embraces and supports many of our film actions, was also fruitful and meaningful.

On Saturday night on 2/3/2024 in the ground floor amphitheater next to the “Apollo” hall at the University of the Aegean, students, university students, and a lot of people watched with interest the film by the director and university student Apostolos Karakasis: “Next Station: Utopia » together with producer Marco Gustin. This documentary recorded for 3 years the life and personal conflicts of the dismissed workers of BIOME, who are self-managing the factory, some even until now, through a solidarity movement in Greece and abroad. The conversation with the film’s producer Marco Gustin that followed was meaningful and enjoyable, as Gustin himself is extremely intelligent and witty in the humor he exudes, even in simple friendly conversation. The screening was a co-organization with the Social Cooperative Enterprise “KoinSEp for Nature”, which was founded in Rhodes in 2020 and develops activities around the protection and promotion of the natural environment of Rhodes with the journalist and writer Nektarios Kalogirou as the initiator and coordinator.

Our above events were carried out with the financial support of the Department of Audiovisual and Film Festivals of the Ministry of Education and Culture.

To all the organizations and their people, who always and also in these recent film screenings support our actions, the Cine-Education Group for audiovisual literacy, wishes to express its sincere thanks to Christos Nikolareas (director of photography and partner of our Group), to the award-winning directors,

university student Periklis Hoursoglou and producer Markos Gastin, who, despite the adversities of the weather, traveled and honestly introduced us to the deep waters of their complex and masterful cinematography. In addition, without the moral and practical support of the professor and dean of the Faculty of Humanities Loizos Sofos, director of the Laboratory of Psychology, Pedagogical Research and Media in Education of PTDE, who together with his colleagues and the administrative staff of the Faculty of Humanities of the University of the Aegean in Rhodes, supported with their perfect technical equipment the master class of Pericles Hoursoglou and the promotion of the Saturday evening. Further thanks are also due to Nikos Tzedakis for hosting Pericles Hoursoglou and Nikos Kasseris for hosting Markos Gastin, as well as to M.M.E. printed and electronic media of Rhodes and especially to our communication sponsors: the Cultural Radio Lychnari 91.4 on f/m and the electronic cultural magazine LOTOS, i.e. Panagiotis Christoforou and Eurydiki Kovanis, for promoting the events and granting the interviews with the creators themselves.

For those who missed the screening of “EVOLUTION” last week, this excellent film by Pericles Hoursoglou will be screened again at PALLAS from 11/3/24 to 13/3/24 at 7:30pm. Special thanks, therefore, we owe primarily to the owner Evangelia Kaka, but also to the staff of the welcoming and only remaining cinema Pallas 5 Cinemas in Rhodes.
