The Government handles the hypothesis that the water from the Mazar dam, in Azuay, was allowed to flow. This April 18, 2024, the Secretary of Communication, Roberto Izurieta, said that there are acts that must be explained based on the investigations being carried out, among them, opening the floodgates of that dam.
In an interview, Izurieta said that it is being investigated, based on the complaints made, whether the alerts were not given in time or are possible acts of sabotage that must be explained. “Why was the Mazar dam emptied? They let the water run. The floodgates opened,” she mentioned.
He also noted that, historically, the largest number of complaints about corruption at the highest level have been filed in the electricity sector. But the lack of updating an energy model that adapts to climate change and does not depend solely on a water basin also added to the current problem.
In this scenario, the Government maintains that the alerts were not given in time. It must be remembered that the complaint filed with the Prosecutor’s Office by Arturo Félix Wong, Secretary of the Public Administration, speaks of saboteurs and the possible crime of paralyzing a public service.
