Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman decided to make the country independent only after the Pakistanis took steps to take away the rights of the Bengali mother tongue, said his daughter Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

He gave this information at a discussion meeting organized on the occasion of historic March 7 at Dhaka district Awami League office in Tezgaon of the capital on Thursday (March 7).

The Prime Minister said, after independence, the father of the nation was asked, since when do you think about the independence of the country. He replied, “When Pakistanis took away the right to speak their mother tongue in 1948, I decided not to live with them anymore.”

Sheikh Hasina said, freedom is only through the language movement. A leader has sacrificed his life day after day to speak for the disenfranchised-exploited people and has been jailed repeatedly. Suffered imprisonment and torture. He took one step after another keeping the goal in front of him.

‘He (Bangabandhu) was elected in fifty-four (1954), he was in the National Assembly in fifty-six. But followed the rules. Set a goal. Which he never uttered in his mouth. But to inspire a nation in the spirit of independence or to organize and unite them was a difficult task. He did that difficult work very efficiently.’
