Despite a crushing defeat in Gujarat, the victory in Himachal took the number of states in which the Congress is in power alone to three. The other two states are Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh. Congress is in power in Jharkhand and Bihar as part of the grand alliance. In Tamil Nadu, the DMK is part of the coalition but does not participate in the cabinet. One of the BJP-ruled states was lost. The Modi-Shah alliance may not forget this even as it celebrates its record victory in Gujarat. With the loss of Himachal, the number of states in which the BJP is in power alone has gone to eleven. Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana, . The party has sole rule in Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Goa, Karnataka, Assam, Tripura, Manipur and Arunachal Pradesh. In Maharashtra, Shiv Sena is led by Shinde, but BJP is in control. NDA allies are in power in Sikkim, Mizoram, Nagaland and Meghalaya.

Aam Aadmi Party leads the government in Delhi and Punjab. In the other six major states in the Southeast belt, non-BJP, Congress and AAP parties are in power, with the Trinamool Congress in Bengal, the BJD in Odisha, the BRS in Telangana, the YSR Congress in Andhra and the DMK in Tamil Nadu with a large majority. CPM-led LDF also has a good majority in Kerala.

Assembly elections will be held in many of these states before the Lok Sabha elections. Karnataka, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Telangana, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura will go to polls next year and early 2024. Assembly elections in Madhya Pradesh, Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim are held along with the Lok Sabha elections.
