US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken called on the Russian authorities to take measures to combat hackers on its territory. He announced this on Tuesday, July 13, speaking at a conference in Washington. “Our message is clear: countries harboring cybercriminals are responsible for taking action. If they do not, we will,” the head of the State Department stressed.

Meanwhile, as reported by Bloomberg, the sites of the hacker group REvil, which supposedly operates from Russia, turned out to be inaccessible. The entire online infrastructure of the hackers is down, including their payment portals and chat. It is not yet known what this is connected with – a temporary failure or shutdown, undertaken by the group itself or by law enforcement agencies.

Biden’s conversation with Putin and the REvil cyberattack

This happened a few days after US President Joe Biden, on July 9, during a telephone conversation, called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to stop hacker attacks by cybercriminals from the Russian Federation.

Recently, REvil hackers have carried out a number of high-profile cyberattacks demanding ransom for unlocking systems. The July hack of IT firm Kaseya affected thousands of companies around the world. For the return of access to damaged computer systems, the hackers initially asked for $ 70 million, but later, in an interview with a Reuters journalist, they called the amount of $ 50 million.
