Cher Seeks Conservatorship Over Son Elijah Blue Amid Mental Health Struggles

Cher’s latest legal move to control her son Elijah Blue Allman’s finances follows two arrests in New Hampshire earlier this year and comes as the musician remains hospitalized in a psychiatric facility there.

The 79-year-old singer filed a petition last week in Los Angeles County Superior Court seeking a temporary conservatorship over the 49-year-old’s estate, citing severe mental health and substance-use issues. She is asking the court to appoint private fiduciary Jason Rubin to manage Allman’s assets, including disbursements from a trust established by his late father, Gregg Allman of the Allman Brothers Band, and to pay his outstanding bills.

Court documents show Allman’s estate is valued at approximately $132,000, but he faces mounting debts, including an estimated $200,000 tax bill, unpaid spousal support to his estranged wife Marieangela King, and an $18,000 debt to a drug dealer. His brother Devon Allman said in a sworn affidavit that he recently negotiated that debt directly with the dealer after finding Elijah owed more than he could pay.

The filings allege Allman has no concept of money and spends nearly all of his trust disbursements immediately on drugs, expensive hotels, and limousine transportation. After receiving funds, he reportedly checks into hotels — often the Chateau Marmont — and uses drugs until he runs out of money, ends up hospitalized, or overdoses.

His behavior has led to multiple evictions: he has been removed from 18 hotels for erratic conduct, caused several kitchen fires, and engaged in troubling sexual behavior toward staff. He similarly allegedly caused tens of thousands of dollars in damage to Airbnb properties rented under a friend’s name, leaving that individual exposed to legal action from the rental company.

The request follows two arrests in New Hampshire: one in late February at St. Paul’s School in Concord, where he was charged with assault, criminal trespass, criminal threatening, and disorderly conduct; and another in early March in Windham, tied to an alleged home break-in that resulted in burglary and bail-violation charges. He is currently being held in a psychiatric hospital in the state as authorities work to restore his competency ahead of any criminal proceedings.

This represents not the first time Cher has sought legal control over her son’s affairs. She filed a similar petition in 2023 but withdrew it after Allman told the court he would change his lifestyle and hire a business manager — promises her attorney now says he abandoned. The last time a comparable request was made, the court rejected it over two years ago.

Key Context Gregg Allman, Elijah’s father and co-founder of the Allman Brothers Band, died in 2017, leaving behind the trust that remains Elijah’s sole source of income.

The hearing on Cher’s latest petition is set for Friday in Los Angeles County Superior Court. Neither her attorney nor Jason Rubin has responded to requests for comment.

Why is Cher seeking a conservatorship now?

Cher says her son’s mental health has severely deteriorated due to substance use, leaving him unable to manage his finances or care for himself, and that recent arrests and hospitalization demonstrate an urgent need for intervention.

What happened the last time Cher tried this?

She filed for conservatorship in 2023 but withdrew the request after Allman told the court he would reform his behavior and hire a business manager — commitments her legal team says he did not uphold.

Who would manage Elijah’s money if the court approves the request?

Cher is asking the court to appoint Jason Rubin, a private fiduciary who works with a firm in Woodland Hills, California, managing trusts for high-net-worth individuals.
