According to an adviser, the British government reacted too late in the first phase of the corona pandemic in 2020. “In retrospect,” the country perhaps should have prepared for a nationwide lockdown in the early days of the pandemic, the U.K.’s chief medical adviser, Chris Whitty, said on Tuesday.
He made the comments during questioning as part of an investigation commissioned by then-Prime Minister Boris Johnson in 2021. He described the difficulties in weighing up the risks of introducing crucial measures “too early” or “too late”.
Whitty said he was particularly concerned about the longer-term impact of isolation orders on poor people and people living alone. However, he rejected allegations that he had warned the government against “overreaction”.
