The coronation of King Charles 3rd will cost the public coffers up to 100 million pounds sterling, the equivalent of R$ 625.3 million. The information was disclosed in well-known vehicles of the international press, such as the British newspaper The Guardian and the American magazine Time.

The ceremony will take place next Saturday (6) at Westminster Abbey in London. But, in addition to the traditional parade, the event will feature other initiatives, such as a night show and a large national meal. In all, there will be three days of celebrations.

Unlike Charles’s mother, the late Queen Elizabeth II, who, in 1953, was crowned in a three-hour ceremony with 8,000 guests, and with a parade in an 18th-century carriage, the king will have a simpler and more modern coronation. The event will be limited to 2,000 guests, will last just over an hour and will feature a climate-controlled carriage with air conditioning, electric windows and hydraulic suspension.

The decision to have a more modest ceremony can be explained, in part, by Charles’s sensitivity to the cost of living crisis that is plaguing the country, as well as by the king’s ambition to have a leaner, more modern monarchy. Even so, the costs of the event are high and bother part of the British, who do not want to bear the expenses of the ceremony.

On Twitter, users expressed repudiation for the situation.

“British coronation will cost taxpayers £100m. Retweet if you agree this is an obscene waste of public money, especially during a crisis,” wrote one user.

“Totally disgusting and disgraceful at any time, especially during this crisis. The monarchy is out of date,” lamented another.

“Please remind me again, why are we having to pay £100m for King Charles coronation?” asked a third.

Journalist Norman Baker, columnist for The Guardian, also spoke out on the subject. In a text published this Saturday (29), he harshly criticizes the fact that the coronation is paid for with public money and defines the country’s royal traditions as “selfish”. He also questions why the sovereign needs a coronation, since he is already the king and other monarchical countries, such as Denmark, Sweden and Norway, consider the practice “archaic and unnecessary”.
