The President of Faso, Head of State, Captain Ibrahim TRAORE chaired on Friday October 25, 2024, the official opening ceremony of the 17th edition of the Ouagadougou International Crafts Fair (SIAO) under the theme “African Crafts, entrepreneurship and youth empowerment”.

In his speech delivered by the Minister of Industry, Commerce and Crafts, Serge Gnaniodem PODA, the Head of State, Captain Ibrahim TRAORE welcomed ” the importance of capital » the theme that emphasizes the decisive role of crafts in the economic and social development of Africa and at the same time to emphasize the participation and commitment of the youth in this sector.

According to the sponsor of this 17th edition of the SIAO, the President of the Transitional Legislative Assembly, Dr. Ousmane BOUGOUMA, “Entrepreneurship in a productive sector such as the craft sector can be a key factor in the structural transformation of our economy due to its strong capacity to create jobs ».

In fact, crafts contribute more than 20% to the continent’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and employ 60 million people, mostly young people.

To make this important sector an asset for economic and social development and the fight against unemployment, the President of Faso, in his speech, mentioned the strong measures taken to support players in the sector and to increase the consumption of health products. These include, among other things, the labeling of certain artisan products (Faso Dan Fani, Koko Dunda, Saponé hat, shea butter and bicycle chicken), the regime agreement between the government and the Craft Trades Association, the establishment of days dedicated to local consumption and patriotic commitment, compulsory wearing of the Faso Dan Fani and the Koko Dunda during official ceremonies.

With this in mind, the government has also provided artisans with production kits and tools, ensured the capacity building of these actors through qualifying training focused on the necessary skills to meet the needs of the market, and established a support center for artisan cotton processing.

« These actions show the commitment of the government and players in the sector to make crafts a pillar of economic development. », Captain Ibrahim TRAORE emphasized.

As for the father, he reassured “ my personal commitment and the commitment of the National Representation to support all initiatives and approaches that tend to craft as a sector that participates in the transformation of our economy and our development ».

Together with the President of the ALT, the fashion designer François 1er is the artistic sponsor of this 17th edition of the SIAO. 30 countries from all continents are expected, 4,000 exhibitors, 150 buyers and professional visitors, 350 journalists, 355,000 general public visitors.

SIAO 2024 is a sign that delegations from many countries are present, evidence ” international trust and solidarity towards Burkina Faso as it continues to seek independence and sovereignty », according to the Head of State, Captain Ibrahim TRAORE.

Mali and Niger, members of the Confederation of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) are the special guest countries of this edition of the Ouagadougou International Crafts Fair. They are represented by large delegations led by their minister responsible for crafts, a symbol of the strength of the fraternal and supportive ties that bind our communities together.

The main innovation of this 17th SIAO is the “AES village” which focuses in one place on the wealth of creation of the artisans in the AES space.

The symbolic cutting of the ribbon by the President of Faso, Captain Ibrahim TRAORE, opens ten days dedicated to the promotion and improvement of African craftsmanship in the Burkinabe capital.
