The two-thirds majority is an impressive confirmation of our work for the Upper Austrian employees. But it is also a clear message to the federal government, which is forgetting the interests of working people with its policy of inflation, high rents and energy costs. The lower voter turnout is a downer that results from the general dissatisfaction with politics, which is no wonder given the poor work of this federal government.

Linz (OTS) – The 2024 Chamber of Labor election in Upper Austria has ended. Around 575,000 members were called upon to cast their votes and thus elect the AK General Assembly, the “Parliament of the Employees”. The Social Democratic Trade Unionists (FSG) were able to defend their two-thirds majority with their top candidate, AK President Andreas Stangl, and achieved 66.16 percent of the vote. The Freedom Workers/Freedom Party of Austria (FA-FPÖ) became the second strongest faction and achieved 14.99 percent. The final election results will be available on Friday, March 22, 2024.

At 66.16 percent, the FSG is 4.85 percent below its all-time high from 2019, when it captured 71.01 percent. The faction of top candidate AK President Andreas Stangl, who was running for the AK election for the first time, was able to hold the two-thirds majority in the general assembly.

The Freedom Workers/Freedom Party of Austria (FA-FPÖ) with their top candidate Gerhard Knoll came in second and got 14.99 percent. This is an increase of 4.79 percent compared to 2019. This is followed by the Austrian Employees’ Association/Faction of Christian Trade Unionists (ÖAAB-FCG) with the first on the list, Cornelia Pöttinger, with 11.09 percent (-2.32%).

The Alternatives and Greens/Independent Trade Unionists (AUGE/UG) with top candidate Martin Gstöttner received 3.93 percent of the votes (-0.29%), the PFG – your non-party interest group with Matthias Friedl, which took part for the first time, got 2.43 percent and The Trade Union Left Bloc (GLB) headed by Daniel Steiner received 1.40 percent.

A total of 202,964 votes were cast, of which 198,172 were valid and 4,792 were invalid. 575,744 people were eligible to vote. 55.15 percent of the votes were cast in the company election district and 22.20 percent in the general election district. Voter turnout fell by 5.75 percent and stands at 35.25 percent. The final result of the AK election in Upper Austria will be known after all voting cards have been counted on Friday, March 22nd.
