A grand jury – a panel of citizens with investigative powers – constituted by prosecutor Fani Willis, indicted on August 14 Mr. Trump and eighteen other people in connection with this case. They are prosecuted under a law on organized crime which provides for sentences of five to twenty years in prison.

According to court documents published a few hours earlier on Monday, his lawyers agreed to pay 200,000 dollars in bail (nearly 185,000 euros) for his first hearing in this case. Four other of the defendants also agreed to post bail ranging from $10,000 to $100,000 each, allowing the defendants not to be remanded in custody, provided they violate no law, refrain from making threats and not to communicate with each other other than through their lawyers.
