It’s the dark secret of electric cars: the vehicles emit no carbon dioxide on the road, but the production of their batteries is anything but clean.

Many batteries are produced in China, often with coal power. And the mining of the metals they contain pollutes forests, lakes and soils in Africa and South America. But all of that is about to change. At least that’s what the EU wants. The parliament in Strasbourg has now passed a new battery regulation. If it becomes reality, a weighty non-purchase argument of the opponents of e-cars will no longer apply in the future.
