Many French people study abroad. France is the sixth student “exporting” country, with nearly 109,000 young people on international mobility in 2020, i.e. 25% more than in 2015, according to figures published in June 2023 by Campus France, the agency responsible for promoting French higher education abroad. Their favorite destinations? Canada, Belgium, United Kingdom.

For those who leave for a semester, a year or several years, the question of money management arises. For students settling in one of the twenty countries of the euro zone, it’s simple: the cost of bank card transactions is the same as in France. Payments are therefore free. If your bank charges withdrawals to distributors outside its network, you will pay the same fees whether you are in France or elsewhere in the euro zone.

“Those under 25 sometimes benefit from unlimited free withdrawals, in particular at BNP Paribas and in certain branches of the Agricultural Credit and Savings Bank »however, specifies Basile Duval, spokesperson for the comparator Panorabanques.

Coffees, transport, lunches, shopping, outings: the bill goes up very quickly if you multiply the small purchases. Ditto for withdrawals, which are also often chargeable.

Free payments all over the world

However, solutions exist both in traditional banks and in online ones. Reserved for 18-30 year olds, the Globe Trotter offer (2 euros per month) from Crédit Agricole Ile-de-France allows for example free payments and withdrawals anywhere in the world. At BNP Paribas, SG (new name for the Societe Generale group’s retail bank) or LCL, you must subscribe to an international plan (2 to 5 euros per month) in addition to the bank card contribution (2 to 3 euros per month). month excluding promotion).

As for online banks, the Original account (2.90 euros per month) of Ma French Bank offers free payments and withdrawals anywhere in the world. Boursorama (Ultim card), Fortuneo (Fosfo) and Hello Bank (Hello One) display free offers including unlimited payments abroad (and withdrawals for Fortuneo), provided you carry out at least one transaction per month .

Young people living outside the euro zone also favor the neo-banks Revolut and N26, whose standard offers are free. “We do not charge any fees when paying by card in foreign currencies, and the exchange rate we apply is more favorable than that of other banks”says Antoine Le Nel, director in charge of global growth at Revolut.
