BOLZANO. One man survives for 23 hours under an avalanche. Despite the extremely low body temperature and thanks to the efforts of the emergency team and intensive care unit of the health company South Tyrolean, his life was saved. The case of a Venetian ski mountaineer recovered from the snow masses in Val Badia in January 2023 it had traveled around the world and now ends up in the scientific press.

“The fact that it was successful, despite the long burial time, very low body temperature and extreme frostbite, makes this case spectacular,” he says Hermann Bruggeremergency physician and founder of the Mountain Emergency Medicine Institute of Eurac Research.

The buried victim was taken to the intensive care unit of the Bolzano hospital. Under the direction of primary Marc Kaufmann, the work of warming up the body began immediately. They were used two blowers to distribute hot air (up to 40 degrees) over the body surface using the principle of convection. This non-invasive technique was able to warm the patient by 3.5 degrees Celsius per hour. Even a severely frostbitten hand was saved.
