One of the newest is direct CO2 capture (DAC), which Porsche intends to apply in its Chilean Haru Oni ​​planta pilot project that will supply the already operational synthetic fuels factory that they have in the region.

Since last December, Porsche has been generating a synthetic fuel that is capable of converting internal combustion engines into net emissions. The rate in the first phase is 130,000 liters per year.

This amount is residual given the consumption of gasoline in the Andean country – it is around 15.3 million liters per day – but the brand intends to expand production to 55 million per year once the pilot phase ends and expand it to 550 million around 2027.

The key to producing synthetic fuels lies in the use of renewable energy to minimize environmental impact. The goal of the sports brand is to achieve a CO2-neutral balance throughout the value chain by 2030, in line with the Brussels goals.

One advantage of DAC technology is that CO2 can be extracted anywhere there is renewable energy. Electricity for Haru Oni’s filter system could be generated by wind power. And the necessary heat could come from the hydrogen generation process at the plant itself.

“The Volkswagen Group identified the extraction of CO2 from the atmosphere as a relevant issue for the future already in 2019,” he says.
