At the Compagnie française, a restaurant in downtown Toulouse (Haute-Garonne), customers are rather surprised and approach as much to take a selfie with Joey Starr as to taste the three Carnival Sun Juice rums* presented by Ludovic Kpodar, one of his three associates in this adventure. The four men have in fact launched a range which today includes three blends from different origins: Barbados, Guatemala-Belize and Jamaica. “We are all lovers of gastronomy and spirits,” says Guillaume Château, one of the partners, who has worked in the Armagnac sector. “Throughout our travels, we wanted to share our favorites. »

Aged in barrels in the tropics

Bottled in the Gers, the rums selected by Carnival Sun Juice are aged in barrels in the tropics, “unlike many brands”, assures Guillaume Château. And it is in Toulouse, where the company is headquartered, that the four friends decided to introduce their products. “The one from Barbados is quite sweet, with notes of vanilla and candied fruit, rather round, easy to drink,” explains Ludovic to the curious who came to taste during this somewhat improvised master class at the start of the evening within the Toulouse establishment. “Although they are very different, we wanted accessible rums, which speak to everyone,” he continues. Nearly 15,000 bottles have already been sold and the brand, which primarily targets wine merchants, is in the process of reproducing. After its three molasses rums, an agricultural rum from Martinique will complete the range.

“We will also release limited series, every 6-8 weeks, from 500 to 2000 bottles,” adds Guillaume Château. To do this, Carnival Sun Juice will rely on collaborations with great chefs or artists who will offer rums that resemble them. “I’m having fun,” rejoices Joey Starr, who learned a lot about rum during the show La Route de la soif. “For this doc, I went a bit like a speaker, and I discovered the human stories behind the product, the know-how,” continues the former NTM employee. “I have a special history with the West Indies, where my parents are from. And rum is a political product, which combines a societal and personal history. This is why the assemblages have a bit of the four of us. It’s a human adventure. »

It is also this friendship which explains why the evening continued around cocktails at Ma Biche sur le Toit, another establishment managed by the Allforyou company. “Ludovic is a friend and, when he made me taste his rums, I wanted to introduce them to my customers,” smiles its manager Arnaud Chérubin.
