The resistance of the Ukrainian forces surprised the invading Russian armies, as did many foreign experts and observers. Despite their numerical inferiority, having less heavy armament, the Ukrainian fighters managed to stop, and in some cases, repel the invaders. North of kyiv in particular, Ukrainian units, mobile, equipped with anti-tank missiles, led decisive battles against poorly maneuvering, poorly controlled Russian armored columns, hanging on to the main roads, inflicting heavy losses on them. Their action saved the capital, and their resistance led Russian forces to evacuate the towns they occupied in the vicinity of kyiv, leaving hundreds of civilian corpses in their trail of destruction.
