In the Kaunas district court, this case cannot be opened in any way, because one of the victims, the leader of a famous and influential gang in the past, 51-year-old Egidijus Smailys, does not appear at the court hearings.

E. Smailis is unable to serve the summons – police officers went to his house three times, he was visible through the window, but he refused to accept the summons.

Therefore, according to Tautvilės Merkevičiūtė, assistant to the president of the court for media and public relations, during the hearing held on Thursday, it was decided to bring him in, instructing the police to do so.

Without the participation of the victim, the case cannot be heard, so the process stalls.

Due to the non-participation of E. Smailis and other reasons, the meetings have already been postponed 3 times – the next meeting is scheduled for April 4, so it is hoped that this time there will be no obstacles.

The bloody attack on Laisvė Alley was carried out on August 25, 2023, when eight masked thugs entered the cafe in the middle of the day and in front of the naked, shocked people around them, began to beat the four men who were having lunch there with metal rods and machetes, who are also classified as members of the criminal world.

During the attack, Rytis Sadauskas, 43, a close friend of the leader of the “Agurkinių” gang, Saulius Velečka-Agurkas, E. Smailys, who was also associated with the “Doctors” gang, and other Kaunas known to the police, were beaten. They needed medical help, some ended up in the hospital.

7 defendants appeared before the court – 39-year-old Vitalijs Zakrževskis, 37-year-old Edgar Rezajevs, 31-year-old Lukas Shcherbinskas, 30-year-old Rokas Sipavičius, former European K-1 amateur bushido champion Juozas Minkevičius, 28-year-old, 27-year-old Tadas Muchinskas and 26-year-old Karolis Kavaliauskas.

Most of the seven accused hitmen had previous convictions for murder, robbery and other serious crimes.

Two more of their accomplices, including the possible mastermind of the attack, are currently being sought.

It is suspected that the attack was caused by previous disagreements between representatives of Kaunas mafia groups.

Even E. Smailys, who has been convicted 7 times, appeared in two murder cases in which he got away with nothing – due to lack of evidence, both investigations against him were terminated.

One of the victims, 50-year-old Aurelijas R., also associated with the shadowy world, was stabbed more than half a dozen times, and although E. Smailis’s fingerprints and DNA traces were found in her apartment, it was not possible to prove his guilt.

E. Smailys was nicknamed Smailiuk – a nickname related to his father, the now-deceased shul of the criminal world of the temporary capital, Algirdas Smailis, who was compared to Henrik Doctor in terms of influence.

E. Smailys, who was last imprisoned for illegal possession of 6 grenades, a gun and ammunition, was released relatively recently, before the beating on Laisvės avenue.
