US President Joe Biden could announce his candidacy for re-election in 2024 next week, several media outlets said on Thursday. According to Washington Post and CNN in particular, citing anonymous sources, Joe Biden should launch his presidential campaign with the publication of a video.

The Washington Post advanced the date to Tuesday, April 25, which coincides with his 2019 announcement, when he joined the race to beat incumbent President Donald Trump. The daily stresses, however, that the plans of the Biden team are not finalized and that the announcement could be postponed.

Already the oldest sitting president in the history of the United States at 80, Joe Biden would be 86 at the end of a hypothetical second term. His main opponent on the Republican side at the moment is none other than Donald Trump, thus opening up the possibility of a rematch in the 2020 election, which had exposed the country’s gaping political fault lines.

Battle with the Republicans

In 2019, Joe Biden had already announced his candidacy by video. If many initially saw him as a “has-been”, out of the political world since the end of his term as vice-president of Barack Obama, the former senator from Delaware had won the Democratic nomination before beating Donald Trump.

Joe Biden has already hinted on multiple occasions that he would run for re-election, including during his trip to Ireland last week, when he said: “I told you that I was planning to run again” .

Joe Biden’s supporters, however, have indicated that he sees no urgency in formalizing his entry into the race. Republicans will have to grapple with a divisive nomination battle within their own camp, including the specter of a duel between Donald Trump and Ron DeSantis, while the incumbent president benefits the absence of major Democratic candidates facing him.
