Russian schoolchildren became winners among representatives of 14 countries

The team of Russian schoolchildren won six gold medals at the first Open International Astronomy Olympiad (OWAO 2023), which was held at the Sirius Educational Center.

Five students from Moscow: Kirill Roshchin, Dmitry Sankovsky and Dmitry Timofeev from the secondary school of the Center for Pedagogical Excellence, Svyatoslav Suglobov and Konstantin Telelyukhin from school No. 57, as well as Egor Potapov from the Phystech Lyceum in Dolgoprudny, became the best among their peers from different countries of the world. Among them, in addition to Russia, Peru, Iran, Belarus, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Venezuela were represented, and in a remote format – Cuba, Mongolia and Kazakhstan. In total, representatives from 14 countries took part in the Olympiad.

The children and coaches were congratulated on their well-deserved victory by the Minister of Education of the Russian Federation Sergei Kravtsov. And “MK” phoned one of the guys’ mentors, the head of the physics department at the Phystech-Lyceum, Konstantin Kutelev:

– Tell us what the International Astronomy Olympiad for high school students is like today?

— Of course, this is a very difficult competition, an event that requires special preparation. Astronomy is a subject that contains a large amount of scientific information from many fields of science. You need to know physics very well, complex mathematics and geometry… For example, our participant Egor Potapov is a candidate for another international Olympiad – in physics.

– Can you list to what extent you need to know at least one astronomy in order to participate in such a competition of minds?

– You should always “keep” in mind the scale of the main space objects: galaxies, stars in galaxies, star clusters. Also important are the approximate speeds of stars, the names of the brightest objects, constellations…

– How many of the 88 famous constellations do your students know?

– I think the absolute champions know everything.

“The most interesting thing at the Olympiad for me personally was the practical round,” one of these absolute champions, Dmitry Timofeev, who scored the highest number of points at the Olympiad, shared with the Sirius website. “I like tasks related to data processing, analyzing resulting graphs, and so on.”

Dmitry also added that he is interested in amateur astronomy, astrophotography, and after graduating from school he plans to enter the P. K. Sternberg State Astronomical Institute at Moscow State University. Lomonosov.
