“Welcome home, Marcel!” » It is with this formula that the Spanish club Villarreal concludes the press release formalizing the return of Marcelino, 58, at the helm of the team this Monday. Villarreal CF and Marcelino have reached an agreement running until 2026, i.e. the end of the current season, plus the following two financial years.

After only 90 days in Marseille, Marcelino submitted his resignation on September 20, because of a stormy meeting between the management of OM and its supporters.

Without further ado, Marcelino will lead his first two training sessions this Tuesday. Between the two sessions, he will be presented to the media during a press conference. There will, of course, be no question of full presentations, since this is Marcelino’s second mission at the helm of the yellow submarine. The coach first spent time at the club between January 2013 and August 2016.

The native of Gijon had taken the team while it was sailing in the 2nd division and had obtained the promotion directly. After which, Marcelino, 177 games on the Yellow bench, qualified Villarreal twice consecutively for Europe. He notably reached a semi-final of the Europa League and led the team to the Champions League play-offs, after a 4th place in La Liga during his last season as coach.

Marcelo’s return follows the dismissal of José Rojo “Pacheta”, dismissed barely two months after his appointment on Friday, while Villarreal, beaten 3-1 on the lawn of Atletico de Madrid on Sunday, occupies the 14th La Liga place. In the Europa League, the yellow submarine is 2nd in its group behind Rennes, after its victory on Thursday against Maccabi Haifa (2-1).
