So what can AI really do and what good does it do to us? On December 23, OpenAI founder Sam Altman asked his followers on X (formerly Twitter) what they expected from AI in 2024. Within the first two minutes, the most popular answer was “strong” AI, and Altman had to apologize for disappointing expectations, noting that in 2024 it will not exist. The difference between strong and weak AI is that weak AI, roughly speaking, can perform only one task that it was trained to do: draw pictures of cats, write texts, find violators of public order or traffic in a video stream. Strong AI will be able to do all this together, just like a human can, only faster. According to the most popular conspiracy theory put forward by X users and some media outlets, Altman’s dismissal from OpenAI was due precisely to the fact that somewhere in the bowels of the company, engineers had already invented a strong AI and, horrified by its power, decided to leave this monster underground.
