Minsk resident sent to psychiatric hospital because of comments about Lukashenka and authorities

In the Minsk City Court, 54-year-old Minsker Igor Popov was tried under three articles of the Criminal Code. For comments on the Internet, the man was prescribed indefinite compulsory treatment with strict supervision, the Viasna human rights center reported. The trial took place on May 12, but it became known about it only now.

Sources familiar with the situation told Viasna human rights activists that Igor Popov was detained in early September 2022. He was in custody in the Zhodzina prison. The psychiatric expert opinion was prepared at the Republican Scientific and Practical Center for Mental Health in Novinki.

The trial was closed. Judge Valentina Zenkevich issued a sentence in accordance with three articles of the Criminal Code: Part 1 of Art. 368 (insulting Lukashenka); Art. 369 (Insulting a representative of authority); Art. 364 (Threat of using violence against an employee of the internal affairs bodies).

Popov was assigned indefinite compulsory treatment with strict supervision. The man has already been sent to the Gaytyunishki Psychiatric Hospital in the Voronovsky District.

What is known about “Gaytyunishki”

The Republican Psychiatric Hospital “Gaytyunishki” executes court rulings on compulsory treatment of people. In order to get there after the trial, one must be convicted of dangerous acts and represent “a special danger to society in terms of their mental state and the nature of the deed.” According to information on the official website of the institution, there are three departments in the hospital, where 280 people are kept.
