Chennai മു The Mullaperiyar Dam has been a lifelong concern of Kerala and of Tamil Nadu for many years. Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has announced that a statue of Colonel John Penny Quick, the British engineer who built the dam, will be erected in his hometown.
Steps are being taken to erect a statue in Camberley, the birthplace of Pennywick.
It was his foresight to build the Mullaperiyar Dam in 1895 that solved the water shortage in the five districts of Tamil Nadu.
Penny Quick was annoyed by the sight of a severe drought in the British-occupied state of Madras. The journey to find a solution led to the idea of building a barrier across the Periyar near the King of Travancore.
