As the tenure of the current Vice President Venkaiah Naidu ends on August 10, members of both houses of Parliament today voted to elect the next Vice President who will take office on August 11.

With the support of state parties like Janata Dal (United), YSR Congress, BSP, ADMK and Shiv Sena, Thankar was poised for an easy victory from the start. Although general opposition candidate Margaret Alva received the support of the Aam Aadmi Party, Jharkhand Mukti Morcha and Telangana Rashtra Samithi, she failed to secure the support of the Trinamool Congress, the second largest opposition party after the Congress with 39 MPs in both houses of Parliament. The Trinamool Congress had decided to abstain from the vote, alleging that they were not consulted on the selection of Margaret Alva.

Jagdeep Thankar, 71, is a Jat leader from Rajasthan with a socialist background. Margaret Alva, 80, is one of the senior Congress leaders and has served as the Governor of Rajasthan and Uttarakhand

President Draupadi Murmu congratulated Jagdeep Dhankar on his victory. “Congratulations to Jagdeep Dhankar on being elected Vice President of India. The nation will benefit from the experience of your long and rich public life. My best wishes for a fruitful and successful tenure,” he wrote on Twitter.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met and congratulated Jagdeep Dhankar who was elected as the Vice President of the country.
