MEDELLIN (COLOMBIA). Maxi order managed by Bordignon Group. The company has galvanized ten meter high steel drums and other structures between the Rosà, in the Vicenza area, and Ala, in the Trentino area: they will be used to build an innovative urban cable car in Colombia.

Cable cars have been an established urban transport system in Colombia for some years now. In Medellin there are six cable cars integrated into the urban transport network, while in Manizales, a municipality of over 400,000 inhabitants in the Caldas department, for some years two Leitner cable cars have been perfectly integrated into the public transport system. Now the offer is enriched with a third new plant, also by Leitnerwhich also has a Venetian soul, because it is galvanized in the factories of Rosà, in the Vicenza areae of Ala, in Trentino, by Bordignon Group. The Seca zinc works was acquired by the group in 1993: it has been active since 1980 and today 75 people are employed there.
Cable cars are large-scale works that prove crucial for moving in mountain environments, which are not always easily accessible, and are now spreading even in urban contexts. To ensure their durability it is necessary to galvanize the large pylons on which the gondola lifts and chair lifts move, hanging from a rope. An operation, that of galvanizing, which for years now has seen Bordignon Group as the protagonist, in a collaborative relationship with Leitner, which has the largest European hot-dip galvanizing plant available in its Veneto headquarters.
And so after the first cableway in 2009, along one of the main streets of Manizales, a second dating back to 2013, which connects the bus terminal with the Villa Maria district, the third cable car in the populous Colombian center.
With a length of 2,300 meters, the new four-station cableway system will connect the north of the city with the financial and commercial district and the urban transport hub. By the end of 2024, the new cableway, with its 60 cabins, will connect to the two existing systems, thus expanding the Manizales cableway network, which will then be able to reach a total extension of 4,885 metres. The total weight of the galvanized drums shipped by Zincheria Valbrenta was approximately 200 tons, distributed over 38 drums with diameters of 2.5 meters and a length of 9.4. The heaviest was about eight tons.
Walter Bordignon, director of Bordignon Group, is proud of the completed order. “Operating in international environments of this kind is a source of pride for us,” he says. “Hot galvanizing guarantees high resistance to corrosion, providing a durability of the coating of over one hundred years. We underline that by avoiding maintenance interventions, the eco-environmental sustainability of the system is increased. Each ton of hot-dip galvanized steel, due to the ability of zinc to protect it from corrosion, guarantees an annual saving of 1.66 tons of oil, 4.11 kilograms of carbon dioxide and 68.33 kilograms of sulfur dioxide. Also for this reason, our hope is that this technology will begin to be used more and more in road and railway bridges”.
