This calculator is designed to outshine all others.

Australian researchers from the International Center for Neuromorphic Systems (ICNS) at the Western Sydney University have announced a supercomputer that will be the first in the world to be able to simulate networks on the scale of the human brain.

To work like the human brain, it uses a system that mimics biological processes. More than 228 trillion synaptic operations per second are said to be possible. Our brain achieves similar performance.

Higher efficiency, less power consumption

According to Professor André van Schaik from ICNS, “DeepSouth” differs from other supercomputers in that it was developed along the lines of neural networks. The computer also requires less power and achieves greater efficiency; unlike supercomputers, which are optimized for more traditional computing workloads and have high power consumption. Although they are super fast, they do not “think” in the same way as the human brain.

Professor van Schaik: “This platform will improve our understanding of the brain and develop brain-scale computing applications in various areas, including sensing, biomedicine, robotics, space travel and large-scale AI applications.”

The researchers from Sydney also expect progress in intelligent devices: future mobile phones should benefit as well as sensors for manufacturing and agriculture or less power-hungry and more intelligent AI applications.

Experts from the University of Aachen are also involved in the work. The new super computer is scheduled to go into operation as early as April 2024.
