New Zealand on Tuesday accused a Chinese state-backed cyber group of launching a cyber attack targeting the country’s parliament in 2021.

“New Zealand’s Cyber Security Agency has linked a Chinese state-backed group to a cyberattack targeting parliamentary services,” Government Communications Protection Minister Judith Collins said in a statement.

The New Zealand Minister confirmed that “the Cybersecurity Agency succeeded in repelling the attack and paralyzing the cyber group’s ability to cause any harm to the country.”

China was quick to deny the New Zealand accusation, stressing that Wellington’s claims were “unfounded.”

The Chinese Embassy in Wellington said in a statement: “We categorically reject such baseless and irresponsible accusations.”
