The actress, who became famous for her role in iCarly, has spoken publicly about the difficult relationship with her mother Debra, who died in 2013

On the occasion of her recent comedy show called “I’m glad my mother is dead”, actress Jennette McCurdy has finally given explanations on a title that has raised many perplexities in critics and audiences. McCurdy has in fact revealed that he suffered physical and emotional abuse by his mother Debra throughout his childhood and adolescence, which ended only with the death of his parent in 2013, when his 17-year-old daughter had to rebuild a life from the ground up, and not without difficulty.

Obsession with success

In an interview with People, shadows emerge for the first time in McCurdy’s career, who recalls the climate of chaos and instability that has been omnipresent in his family since he was a very young age. The actress tells her mother as a prey to sudden mood swings and occasional violent behavior, which resulted in an obsession with direct fame on Jennette, her youngest daughter, aged 6 and over. The shattered dream of celebrity is then diverted to the shy McCurdy, forced to the stage to keep the peace and satisfy the maternal ambition.

Child prodigy

From age 10 onwards, McCurdy reveals, her mother began dyeing her hair and whitening her teeth, shortly afterwards switching to calorie counting, which led to precocious anorexia when she landed the role in iCarly. Debra’s death in 2013 leads the repressed teenager Jennette to want to experiment with everything that was forbidden to her, starting a vortex of sex, alcohol and bulimia from which she only emerged after years of therapy and with the abandonment of her career in acting. With the stand-up comedy show and the upcoming memoir, McCurdy seems to have regained control over his life and with relief declares: “I finally feel free.”
