More than 600 people have died in Nigeria’s worst floods in a decade, according to new figures released on Sunday.

More than 1.3 million people have been displaced from their homes by the disaster, a statement from Nigeria’s Ministry of Human Resources said on its Twitter account.

“Unfortunately, 603 lives have been lost as of October 16, 2022,” HRD Minister Satiya Umar Farooq said. The number was 500 last week. But the number has gone up significantly as some state governments are not properly prepared to deal with the floods, the minister said.

In 2012, records indicate that 363 people died in the floods and more than 2.1 million people were displaced by the floods.
