The Income Tax Department has issued a PAN number known as a Permanent Account Number (PAN) to all high income earners. While the Income Tax Department has already advised people to link Aadhaar with their PAN, the deadline has been given till March as some people are yet to link Aadhaar with PAN.
It has already been announced that a fine of Rs.1,000 will be levied if Aadhaar number and PAN card are not linked. It has now warned that if the Aadhaar number is not linked by March, the PAN account will be invalid.
Department of Taxation Notification No. dated 11th May, 2017. 37/2017 exempted categories are persons belonging to the states of Assam, Kashmir, Meghalaya, homeless under the Income Tax Act 1961, persons aged 80 and above and non-Indians. So it is mandatory to link Aadhaar with PAN card for all other people.

If the PAN card becomes inactive, all the accounts created in connection with it are likely to be disabled. PAN is important for transactions today. PAN is required for bank accounts, other savings and trading accounts. So if the PAN becomes invalid, these financial accounts will also be affected.
