Russia does not intend to reduce gas prices for Greece, Dmitry Peskov, press secretary of Russian President Vladimir Putin, said in an interview with the Greek ANT television channel. According to him, the country “consistently fulfills all its obligations to Greek buyers”, meeting more than 40% of Greece’s gas needs.

When asked if Moscow is going to help Greece in the face of high gas prices, Peskov replied that the prices under the existing agreements are based on the price of oil, and Russia does not intend to reduce them by providing a discount.

“This is a matter of bilateral agreements with Gazprom. You simply sign a contract with Gazprom, which will be valid for a certain period, and if this agreement is long-term, you will continue to receive gas at the predicted price. Not with prices that can rise from $ 500 to $ 1100 per night, ”said Peskov.

Peskov rated the relations between the two countries 6 out of 10, because “there is still a lot to be done” and it is necessary “to think about bilateral trade and economic cooperation.”

From January 1 to November 15, Gazprom increased gas exports to non-CIS countries by 8.3% in annual terms to 164.8 billion cubic meters. In particular, supplies to Greece increased by 13.7% compared to the same period in 2020.

Since August, Europe has seen a rapid rise in spot gas prices. The peak of price growth fell on October 6, when the cost of 1000 cubic meters. m of gas came close to the $ 2,000 mark. This also led to a general increase in energy prices in Europe. After Putin’s statements about Russia’s plans to increase gas supplies to the EU, spot prices fell by almost $ 100.
