President Petro referred to the decision of the UN Security Council that unanimously approved a ceasefire resolution in Gaza.

The President of the Republic, Gustavo Petro Urrego, celebrated the unanimous approval of a resolution by the United Nations Security Council that requests an immediate ceasefire in Gaza during the holy month of Ramadan. The resolution was supported by 14 votes in favor and none against.

In a message shared on his social network account, the Colombian president expressed his satisfaction with this historic decision: “Finally, a ceasefire resolution in Gaza is unanimously coming out of the United Nations Council. I invite the nations of the world to that if Israel breaks this ceasefire diplomatic relations with that country will be broken«.

Colombia’s support for this resolution adds to President Petro’s repeated calls to achieve peace in the Middle East. From different international scenarios, the president has called for a ceasefire and the establishment of a dialogue to resolve the conflict between Israel and Palestine.

During the G77 + China Summit in Havana and at the UN General Assembly, President Petro has questioned the “double standards” in the international response to the conflicts in Ukraine and Palestine. Furthermore, he has called for the creation of UN-sponsored peace conferences to address these problems comprehensively.

Colombia’s call for peace in Gaza has also been reflected in international forums such as the APEC Summit in California and the World Economic Forum in Switzerland. President Petro has denounced the violation of international law in the conflict and has supported initiatives such as South Africa’s complaint against Israel for genocide before the International Court of Justice in The Hague.
