The Region of Epirus and the Society for Epirotic Studies are co-organizing their fifth joint day, with the theme “Pompemeni…” on Friday, March 29, from 10 am to 8 pm, at the EHM Hall

It is the title of a short story by the great Epirus journalist and writer Christos Christovasilis, and it concerns the story of a young woman who was brutally expelled from her village in the 19th century.
The day will cover aspects of the history of the position of women throughout time – Classical Antiquity, Roman Period, Byzantium, Newer and Modern Era – from various perspectives. The legal framework, family law (marriage, procreation, widowhood, divorce), rights and restrictions, participation in civic and religious ceremonies, etc., as read in ancient written sources, literature-poetry or they are found in the visual arts and in the contribution of female composers, finally, as employed by the cinema. The speeches, immediately after the end of the conference, will be presented in ebook format on the internet, so that they can be reached by a larger audience and especially the young people, who watch it continuously.

The event will begin with greetings from the governor of Epirus, Alexandros Kahrimanis, and the curator of cultural affairs & art gallery of E.H.M. Nelli Tzimogianni, to be followed by a reading by the philologist-historian, PhD candidate Dimitra Mytili.
The schedule for the morning session is as follows

11:15–11:30 Athina Karantzia, Historian, Ph.D. PhD -Interpreting the silence.
The abuse of women in ancient Athens.
11:30–11:45 Gasti Eleni, Professor of Ancient Greek and Latin Philology, University of Ioannina – Honor and shame in women’s speech. The case of Tecmessa in Sophocles’ Aedan.
12:15–12:30 Handeli Vasiliki, Historian, Candidate PhD – The abuse of women in ancient Rome. Myth, law and reality.
12:30–12:45 Stratsani Maria, Doctor of Philosophy – Women creators. A forgotten contribution to poetry and music and a belated recognition.
12:45–13:00 Margari Eleni, Doctor of Art History – “This is what he wanted and this is what happened”. Gender violence in European art (15th-17th century).

The afternoon session will follow with the following program:
17:30–17:45 Anna Batistatou, MD, PhD Rector of the University of Ioannina – Discrimination and moral harassment in the field of science.
17:45–18:00 Nakou Agni, Deputy Regional Governor of Epirus – Abusive behaviors in the Ioannina region during the interwar period. Impressions and interpretations.
18:00–18:15 Mytili Dimitra, Philologist-Historian, Ph.D. PhD – Incidents of gender violence in Byzantine and medieval Arabic sources.
18:45–19:00 Verykiou Sofia, Historian – Louise Bourgeois: who weaves what, for whom and why
19:00–19:15 Karantza-Kotsia Mirella, Lecturer at the Department of Greek Language, Literature and Greek Culture, “Ekrem Tsabei” University of Argyrokastro – “Poor child, poor child, jealous child”. The role and position of women in the ethnic Greek minority yesterday and today.
19:15–19:30 Georgoulas Panagiotis, Theatrologist-Historian – The hidden and overt violence against women through the Greek dramaturgy and film industry.
The event will conclude with Dimitra Mytili singing and Dimitra Stavrou on the piano performing four songs of modern Greek music on the theme of women, orchestrated by Nikos Fasoulas and a deropolitan monophonic chant, which will be sung by North Epirus Pantelis Nikos.
