The record of the year at the Vinyla music awards, which are awarded by Czech critics, was the album called Výklopný stelvemety. It was released as his debut last year by producer Václav Peloušek, performing under the name Toyota Vangelis. The discovery of the year is producer and vocalist Klara Wodehn, and the best act is the initiative You won’t pay the rent with enthusiasm.

The winners were announced this Wednesday evening in Prague’s Lucerna Music Bar.

According to award coordinator Pavel Uretšlégr, the winners in the main categories differ. Toyota Vangelis “blazes through a phosphorescent world full of sound experiments, Klara Wodehn is closer to intimate expression and bedroom psychedelia”, compares Uretšlégr. “The common denominator of both of them is the currently strongly resonating hyperpop in the Czech Republic, which they specifically cross over into other genres,” he adds. The word hyperpop refers to a subgenre of electronic music blurring the lines between irony, seriousness, authenticity and artificiality.

The Jana “Apačka” Grygarová award for journalism goes to Julie Pátá and Timon Láska. According to the jury, they are examples of inspiring young cultural journalists.

In the field of journalism, there is also an initiative called Enthusiasm, you won’t pay the rent, which was founded by cultural journalists and which deals with the state of their profession. “The coverage of cultural topics is being deprofessionalized and is moving into the hobby sphere, which is causing the music scene as a fragile and underfunded ecosystem to suffer,” says judge and musician Aneta Martínková. According to her, the initiative promotes the topic in the public space and, for example, appeals to politicians to professionalize the entire art sector by introducing the so-called artist status, which could be a legislative measure to help freelance creators.

In the Bastl Electronic Track challenge, which targets producers of electronic music, the jury of 42 submitted compositions awarded the track Drill by singer and producer Josefína Trantinová aka Fæ Bestia.

The nominees Klara Wodehn, Anna Vaverková, Petra Hermanová and Toyota Vangelis performed at the gala evening in Lucerna Music Bar. Everyone received a traditional visual of the limited stokus LP series, which contains one song from each of the nominees, summarizes the essential achievements of the Czech scene and at the same time serves as a basic award for the winners of all categories.

“Vinyl doesn’t end at this point. We have been active year-round on the domestic music scene for several years, and during the year we are once again preparing a series of concerts, lectures and educational workshops in a number of places throughout the Czech Republic,” adds Pavel Uretšlégr on behalf of the organizers of Vinyl. Last year, critics declared the recording Bečvá by guitarist Tomáš Niesner as the record of the year. The discovery of the year was the digital singer-songwriter Mat213, and the act of the year was the Pop Messe festival.
