Refugee protection concessions shot up 44% in the European Union in 2022

In total, last year, the national authorities adopted 632,360 first instance decisions on asylum applications and another 218,260 final decisions after filing an appeal or review. Meanwhile, the decisions adopted in the first instance gave rise to 310,400 grants of protection status. Another 73,845 achieved a positive decision after an appeal.

Regarding the recognition rate, that is, the proportion of all positive decisions among the total number of decisions, in 2022 it was 49% in the case of first instance decisions and 34% in the case of final decisions on appeal. Among the 10 main citizens that received decisions in the first instance in 2022, the Syrians (94%), Afghans (85%) and Venezuelans (76%) had the highest recognition rates, while the Colombians and Georgians (both 8%) and Bangladeshis (11%) They had the lowest.

The statistics also confirm that the majority of Syrians (68%) and Afghans (55%) obtained protection status in Germany, while practically all Venezuelans who requested protection (92%) obtained it in Spain.
