jpnn.comJAKARTA – Deputy Chairman of the Indonesian Regional Representative Council Sultan B Najamudin responded positively to Prabowo Subianto’s statement complaining that the democratic process in Indonesia was expensive and tiring.

Prabowo previously conveyed this when he was the main speaker at the Mandiri Investment Forum (MIF) 2024 event with the theme “Thriving through Transition” in Central Jakarta, Tuesday (5/3).

“I participated in quite a lot of elections. “And, let me testify, that democracy is indeed expensive and very tiring and there is still a lot that needs to be improved,” said Prabowo.

According to the Sultan, Prabowo’s complaint is an important signal for the Indonesian people not to hesitate, let alone be embarrassed, to return to the previous electoral system.

An electoral system in which the president and vice president are elected indirectly through the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR).

“As a nation, Indonesia must be self-confident and maintain the values in state practice outlined by Pancasila and the 1945 Constitution. We must admit that the current liberal democratic process is very far from the democratic character of Pancasila,” said the Sultan in his official statement on Wednesday. (6/3).

Direct elections in a liberal democracy, said the Sultan, are more detrimental than the benefits of the people’s sovereignty that we want to achieve. Until forever political practices that are high cost and justify any means will always color the direct election process.

“As a result, there will always be allegations of fraud and the potential for horizontal conflict in every election. Even though elections are only a democratic tool or mechanism that is not more important than the quality of the national leadership produced,” said the former Deputy Governor of Bengkulu.

According to the Sultan, Prabowo’s complaint is an important signal for the Indonesian people not to hesitate, let alone be embarrassed, to return to the previous electoral system.
