Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed a bill on Monday that establishes age limits for the use of social networks and websites with sexually explicit content for young people in the region.

The new legislation, called HB3, prohibits children under 14 from having their own social media accounts.

It turned out that adolescents between the ages of 14 and 15 will only be able to create accounts on the different platforms with the consent of their parents.

Additionally, the law imposes mandatory age verification to access pornographic websites, a rule that will come into effect from January 1, 2025.

This law follows similar initiatives in states such as Arkansas, California, Louisiana, Ohio and Utah.

However, these regulations have not been without controversy. In February, an Ohio law was temporarily blocked by a federal judge over concerns about its breadth and the possibility that it violated teenagers’ First Amendment rights, something that also happened in Arkansas.

DeSantis had vetoed an earlier version of the Florida law, expressing his desire to “ensure that any legislation offers parents adequate opportunities to be involved in decisions about their children’s social media use.

That said, the Florida community now waits to see how this law will be implemented and whether it will face legal challenges similar to those in other states.

What is clear is that the debate about the regulation of social networks and their impact on minors is far from over.

Likewise, it is no secret that there are many young people, both in Florida and in the rest of the world, who have been victims of unpleasant moments due to misuse of social platforms.
